Articles in English

English has three articles: a, an, and the. A fourth option — called the zero article — means no article is used at all. Choosing the right article depends on several factors:

  • Is the noun countable or uncountable?
  • Is it singular or plural?
  • Has the noun been mentioned before?
  • Is it a proper noun?
  • Does it have a superlative adjective?

The tool in this unit uses a decision tree to determine the correct article automatically. You mark where an article should go by typing an underscore (_) before the noun.

2

Article Decision Rules

Expand each rule to see how articles are selected.

Use the when:

  • The noun has already been mentioned (second reference)
  • The noun is unique in context (the sun, the president)
  • A superlative adjective is present (the fastest, the best)
  • The noun is a plural proper noun (the Netherlands, the Alps)
I saw a dog. The dog was very friendly.

Use a or an when the noun is:

  • Countable and singular
  • Mentioned for the first time (first reference)
  • Not a proper noun

Use an before a vowel sound; a before a consonant sound.

An elephant.   A university.   An hour.

Use no article when the noun is:

  • Uncountable (water, information, advice)
  • Plural and used in a general sense (Dogs are loyal.)
  • A singular proper noun (Professor Smith, London)
Ø Water is essential.   Ø Professor Blake teaches here.

Check Your Understanding

Which article is correct? '__ hour passed quickly.'

Correct! 'An' is correct because 'hour' begins with a vowel sound (the 'h' is silent). The rule is based on sound, not spelling.
Not quite — review the material and try again. 'An' is correct because 'hour' begins with a vowel sound (the 'h' is silent). The rule is based on sound, not spelling.

'__ information you provided was helpful.' Which article is correct?

Correct! 'The' is correct because 'information' is a specific piece of information that both speaker and listener know about. It is also uncountable, so 'a/an' is impossible.

Why do we say 'a university' rather than 'an university'?

Correct! 'University' begins with a /j/ sound ('you-niversity'), which is a consonant sound. So 'a' is used, not 'an'.

The tool uses a vowel-sound heuristic rather than simply checking the first letter. It recognises that words like hour and honest (silent h) take an, while words like university and European (consonant /j/ or /w/ sound) take a, despite beginning with vowel letters.
